Summer pulls you back to the water — pool laps, ocean swims, paddleboarding. Each one asks the shoulders, core and spine to move in ways most land training doesn't replicate. When mobility is limited, the stroke finds workarounds, and those workarounds tend to be what shows up later as shoulder or neck pain.
That's the focus of this month's Move of the Month from Kimber Swanson, one of our Balanced Body Educators. Her sequence builds on the concept of our body working as a unit for balance control of the core, trunk, thoracic mobility and scapula while supporting the shoulders in an overhead motion.
Water has a second benefit worth noting. Submersion and proximity to water both downregulate the sympathetic nervous system — lowering heart rate, supporting recovery, and offsetting the stress load most clients are carrying into summer. Balanced Body's article on Pilates and nervous system regulation covers the mechanism in more depth.
With Father's Day landing mid-month, our Recipe of the Month is grilled flank steak with chimichurri — a leaner cut, a bright herb sauce, and a more digestible Father's Day plate than the usual ribs. We're also adding new weekend classes in Burbank and Studio City this month, taught by Nadine, with a summer class-pack offer. Details below.

MEET YOUR NEW INSTRUCTOR – Nadine Saleh
|
I've been a nurse for the past seven years, and through the physical demands of healthcare, I discovered firsthand how transformative Pilates can be. After struggling with back pain and learning the importance of proper body mechanics, Pilates became a huge part of improving both my strength and overall well-being. That experience inspired me to pursue comprehensive training through Balanced Body so I could help others experience the same benefits through science-based movement.
I'm passionate about creating an encouraging, welcoming environment where clients feel supported, challenged, and empowered in their movement. I love connecting with people, watching clients grow stronger and more confident, and helping them build sustainable movement patterns that carry into everyday life. I'm so excited to be part of this community and can't wait to move with you in class.

FEATURED READ Pilates for Stress & Nervous System Regulation
|
Strength and mobility are only part of what Pilates trains. Controlled breath, paced movement, and proprioceptive focus also support nervous system regulation — a relevant point for clients managing high training loads, summer travel, or general life stress. Balanced Body's article outlines the mechanism and practical applications.

Grilled Flank Steak with Chimichurri A leaner cut than ribeye or strip, flank steak delivers high-quality protein, iron, and B vitamins with less saturated fat than typical BBQ cuts. A bright herb chimichurri — parsley, cilantro, garlic, olive oil — adds antioxidants without relying on sugar-heavy barbecue sauces. Quick to cook, easy to slice against the grain, and a more digestible Father's Day centerpiece than the usual ribs.

Advanced Swan This month, Kimber Swanson — one of our Balanced Body Educators — demonstrates the Advanced Swan, assisted by Brianna Cabot. The exercise trains the front and back of the body to work as one unit, building core strength and flexibility together: the deep abdominals co-contract with the spinal extensors to support the spine in extension, rather than collapsing into the lower back. The result is an integrated back line that holds up under load — useful for anyone heading into pool laps, ocean swims, or any summer activity that demands a strong, mobile back.
