Beyond Core Work: Building Complete Lower Body Strength
|
It is Spring time which is a wonderful time to grow and rejuvenate. Here at Core Conditioning we incorporate a whole body integration approach. This month we will focus on lower body strength training which improves performance on trails, during lateral movements, and in activities requiring sustained quad and hip strength.
Quadriceps and hip abductors determine knee stability and force generation during climbing, descending, and directional changes. Weak hip abductors allow knee valgus (inward collapse), increasing knee and other lower body injury risk and creating compensatory patterns. These deficiencies can present themselves during physical activity creating problems.
This month's Move of the Month demonstrates band walks in a squat position—building quad strength while activating hip abductors to reinforce proper knee alignment. The movement applies to hiking steep terrain, basketball, football, soccer, and everyday tasks like stair climbing.
Schedule an assessment to identify your strength deficits and dysfunctions and develop programming for April's outdoor activities.
