We can find many ways to identify special needs in education like assessment, interviews and even observations. It is hardly recommended to consider the use of some other methods for example: competence frameworks, performance management data, documentation like lesson plans, job descriptions and personal specifications.

Learning objective:

To identify different methods for detecting educational needs through the use of a poster with the idea of avoiding unnecessary words and jargon.

Instructions:

1. Read and take notes from the following article:

“How to Identify Children with special needs“

2. Research additional information from reliable sources to strengthen your understanding from the topic.

3. Select the most important and relevant information from the reading. Focus on ideas that are clear and useful for creating an informative poster aimed at raising awareness or educating others.

4. You will now create a poster that explains how to identify children with special needs. The goal is to present the key information in a visual and accessible way, so that others can understand the signs and importance of early identification and support.

5. Search for suitable images to illustrate your poster. You can visit websites like Freepik, Canva, Genially or any other royalty-free image site. Look for images that visually represent the concepts in your poster, such as inclusion, education, or support for children with special needs.

6. Go to Piktochart and begin designing your poster.

7. Define the message or story you want to tell through your poster. Think about whether your focus will be on raising awareness, highlighting signs, or encouraging early support.

8. Choose a poster design template that fits your content and allows you to organize the information clearly.

9. Edit the poster using the Piktochart editor. Replace the sample text with the key points you selected from the reading, add your chosen images, and personalize the titles, colors, and layout as needed.

10. Improve the visual elements of your poster. Add icons, bullet points, or simple graphics to make the information easier to read and more visually appealing.

11. Write a brief reflection as a conclusion, between 150 and 200 words. In your reflection, explain what you learned about identifying children with special needs, why early detection is important, and how this knowledge can contribute to a more inclusive and supportive educational environment. You may also reflect on how this activity helped you think about your own role in the educational process.

11. Submit both your final poster and your written reflection to the task mailbox.

Reflection (150–200 words)

    Reflection:
While creating this poster, I gained valuable insights into how crucial early identification is for children with special needs. I learned that recognizing communication delays, cognitive challenges, motor skill difficulties, and behavioral signs can make a significant difference in a child’s academic and emotional development. Early detection helps educators and families provide timely support, which can reduce frustration and prevent long-term learning gaps.

As an aspiring educator, this activity helped me understand the importance of observing students closely and working with other professionals to create inclusive environments. Designing the poster also helped me organize key ideas in a clear and impactful way, which is essential when raising awareness among parents and peers.

This knowledge strengthens my role as an advocate for inclusion. By staying alert to students’ needs and taking early action, I can contribute to a more equitable education system where every child has the opportunity to thrive.
