Reflective Forum Post: My Teaching Journey and Integration of ELT Methodologies
Over the course of developing and implementing my teaching plan, I’ve come to a deeper understanding of the balance between theory and practice in English language teaching. Initially, I approached lesson planning with a strong emphasis on communicative language teaching (CLT), focusing on student interaction and authentic use of language. However, through reflection and peer feedback, I realized that incorporating a variety of methodologies—such as task-based learning, the lexical approach, and elements of grammar-translation—can create a more inclusive and adaptable classroom environment.
Key Takeaways:
Flexibility is critical. No single methodology can meet all student needs. By integrating multiple approaches, I was able to better support learners with different backgrounds, proficiency levels, and learning preferences.
Theory must meet practice. Understanding SLA (Second Language Acquisition) theories, such as Krashen’s Input Hypothesis and Vygotsky’s Sociocultural Theory, helped me design activities that not only engage students but also support their cognitive and linguistic development. For example, scaffolding tasks through peer collaboration led to noticeable improvements in student confidence and language use.
Reflection fuels growth. Regular self-evaluation and student feedback sessions allowed me to adapt my teaching strategies. I discovered that what works in theory doesn’t always translate seamlessly into practice—and that’s okay. The key is being open to change and continually seeking improvement.
Engaging With You All:
I’d love to hear how others have approached the integration of diverse teaching methodologies. Have you found particular combinations that work well in multilingual or mixed-ability classrooms? How do you ensure that theoretical knowledge doesn't just stay in your lesson plan but actually manifests in meaningful student learning?
Looking forward to learning from your experiences and continuing this journey together.
